CERAMIC ‘BOTANY’ EXHIBITION COINCIDES WITH SOUTHERN DRAKENSBERG OPEN GARDENS IN UNDERBERG. 30th October 1st November 2009
The Underberg Studio once again decided to have a ceramic exhibition to tie in with the Southern Drakensberg Open Gardens Festival on the last weekend of October, Two years ago, when Underberg had their open gardens, the gallery held an exhibition entitled “Ceramic Watering Cans’ which featured all the ceramic artists that usually exhibit at the gallery. This year the theme was “Botany” and ceramic artists from all over Southern Africa who belong to Ceramics SA, were encouraged to participate “All the interested artists were given a brief which encouraged them to make anything and everything that has to do with the garden and plants. This broad theme could be interpreted in purely decorative or utilitarian forms and it has been suggested that artists focus more on ‘fun and funky’ rather than more serious work”.
Have a look at some photos of the exhibition it was a very diverse and interesting group of work and had very broad appeal.
The following artists participated in the exhibition:- Hennie Meyer; Clementina van der Walt; Shelley Maisel; Ralph Johnson, Lisa Firer; Jenny Bentel; Valerie de Cabissole; Tim Van Vuuren; Julena Naude; Colleen Lehmkuhl; Nic Sithole; Lorrine de Richelieu; Karen Kotze; Jacqueline Boyle; Jacquie Deane; Sandra Goerke; Margot Rudolph; Susan Lomas; Kendal Warren; Susie Dwyer; Fahmeeda Omar; Sharon Weaving; Corrie Hook; Lynette Morris Hale; Martha Zettler; Lorraine Wilson; Lisa Zefferet; Herina Holtzhausen; Griet Buitendag; Martin Swart; Tineke Meijer; Heather Mills; Michele Hamman; & Catherine Brennon. Thank you to everyone for their enthusiasm and support the success of the exhibition rested on your shoulders and you really came up to expectations!
A poster showing the work of various participants will be available to order at the studio or from the website. The older CERAMIC WATERING CAN poster is also available. As a ‘thank you’ to the participating artists, they will be receiving a free download of the poster, ready for mounting. This should be ready very soon and we will email everyone concerned.
The Botany exhibition coincided with the Open Gardens show. Over 400 visitors came through the gallery and garden over that weekend which gave the work good exposure and resulted in some good sales. Have a look at some of the images of the garden and you will see what an exceptional setting we have for the gallery. The original owner of the property, Doreen Teig, landscaped the garden about 40 years ago. As a result, there are huge Camellia and Rhododendron, a variety of flowering Dogwood trees along with Flowering Cherry and Weeping Crab Apple besides over 200 roses. There are several ‘rooms’ in the landscape, which make it an interesting place to wander around. The garden setting with the mountains in the background make it a very different gallery visit and visitors are always welcome to take a stroll in the garden at any time of the year.
